A German tourist was reportedly kidnapped and murdered in Northam, Limpopo Province, Feb. 24. According to police services, the victim was driving from Botswana to South Africa when he was assaulted by a hitchhiker he had assisted and two accomplices. The criminals reportedly kidnapped and killed the victim and robbed him of valuables; it is not clear whether they accessed his banking accounts.

Northam is about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Pretoria (Tshwane).

Exercise vigilance when traveling, especially in tourist hotspots and rural areas. Do not travel after nightfall. Maintain a low public profile and do not show outward displays of wealth. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. Do not hitchhike or travel with unknown persons.
