Opposition party to march from Church Square to Union Buildings in Pretoria (Tshwane), South Africa, 10:00 Feb. 17. Disruptions possible.
The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party plans to rally in central Pretoria (Tshwane) on Feb. 17 to mark the beginning of their election campaign and launch their manifesto. Protesters are set to gather at Church Square from 10:00 and march to the Union Buildings.
Increased security is likely in central Pretoria, especially near the Union Buildings. Localized travel disruptions are possible. There is a low threat of violence; however, the threat will increase should possible counter-protesters become violent or seek to block road access.
Avoid the demonstrations as a standard precaution. Heed the directives of local security officials. Plan for localized road travel delays.
South Africa is set to hold its general election in May-August; the President is yet to announce the exact election date. Election periods in South Africa typically see a high level of political activity, with rallies and events, but are not overly disruptive. While protests and counter-protests are possible, involving minor scuffles, most events tend to be largely peaceful.
