South Africa: Pro-Palestinian activists plan protests in several cities nationwide Feb. 25

Pro-Palestinian activists to stage protests in multiple cities in South Africa, 16:00 Feb. 25. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Pro-Palestinian activists plan protests in several major cities in South Africa on Feb. 25. This is in response to the conflict between Israel and Gaza-based armed group Hamas. Protests have been announced at the following locations from 16:00:

  • Pretoria (Tshwane): Union Buildings

  • Johannesburg: Constitutional Court

  • Cape Town: Parliamentary Buildings

  • Durban: Ecclesia Church, on Flamboyant Drive

  • Bloemfontein: Naval Hill

  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth): the Gap Church, Nile Road

  • Potchefstroom: Die Bult Park, Esselen Street

Increased security is likely near the affected areas especially near governmental buildings. Localized road travel delays are likely near protest sites; demonstrators could march along roadways. Minor clashes between police and demonstrators or between rival activists are possible.

Refrain from discussing topics in public related to the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Avoid all protests. Heed instructions from authorities. Plan for localized road travel delays should protests occur.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the most frequent gatherings occurred in South Africa, where the potential for clashes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian activists is elevated. On Nov. 12, protesters and counter-protesters clashed in Sea Point, Cape Town, prompting localized disruptions.
