Farmers plan to hold tractor protest in central Madrid, Spain, Feb. 21. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.
Farmers affiliated with the Union of Agricultural and Livestock Unions (Union de Uniones de Agricultores y Ganaderos) plan to hold a tractor protest in central Madrid Feb. 21. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand increased state aid for the agricultural sector. Participants will drive tractors into the city in the morning hours and gather at Plaza de la Independencia at 10:30 before proceeding to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food on Plaza de la Infanta Isabel. Demonstration organizers expect at least 500 tractors at the event. Additionally, further rally participants will arrive at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food by bus; large crowds are expected to participate.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in central Madrid, particularly near Plaza de la Independencia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling by road in central Madrid through the morning hours and if traveling by road near the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food through the evening. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
