Increased security is likely in Kindia, Guinea, through at least mid-March following civil unrest March 11-12.
Heightened security is likely in Kindia through at least mid-March following civil unrest on March 11 and 12. The demonstrations are in response to a lack of electricity supply. Protesters blocked several roads in Kindia, March 12, including routes to the city center. Protesters also gathered near the Electricite de Guinee (EDG) offices. Clashes were reported between demonstrators and the police. At least one person was killed in the Caravanserail District. Guinean security personnel have made several arrests.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to prevent protests from taking place. Additional checkpoints and potential movement restrictive measures, such as curfews, are possible. Clashes with security forces are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near demonstrations. Civil unrest or security force deployments could lead to road travel delays, including along portions of the N1 national highway connecting to Conakry.
Kindia is located approximately 135 km (84 miles) from Conakry.
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Keep away from any locations where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel deploying. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Plan accordingly for protest-related traffic disruptions.
