India: Activists to hold rally towards Line of Actual Control in Ladakh March 27

Activists plan to stage rally towards Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, India, March 27. Increased security likely.

Informational

Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will hold a rally towards the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh on March 27. The action aims to raise awareness of the alleged loss of pastoral land in Ladakh to China and India. Activists plan to reach the Pangong Tso Lake, Demchok, and Chushul areas along the border with China; the exact routes remain unclear. Participation is expected to be in the tens of thousands.

Additional demonstrations are possible across Ladakh on March 27. Possible gathering sites include government buildings, religious centers, public squares, and thoroughfares. Demonstrations have been occurring in Ladakh throughout the past month. This includes a one-day shutdown strike and an ongoing hunger strike in Leh led by Sonam Wangchuk that has lasted for over 20 days.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the rally route and around the main protest site. Although violence is unlikely, isolated clashes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering. Increased vehicular congestion and road closures may affect the vicinity of demonstration sites, especially if street marches or road blockades occur. Officials may impose traffic restrictions, including security cordons, diversions, and road closures along the rally routes through March 27. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also probable as a large number of attendees will reach and leave the venues. Associated business disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Exercise caution around the protest site. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Do not navigate roadblocks as a safety precaution. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all local security and traffic advisories. Confirm ground transport arrangements.
