India: Statehood activists plan to hold a half-day strike and rally in Kargil March 20

Activists from the Kargil Democratic Alliance will hold a rally and a half-day general strike across Kargil March 20. The rally will begin in the morning from Fatima Chowk to Hussaini Park; supporters will demonstrate at Hussaini Park thereafter. The action is part of a series of demonstrations that have occurred across Ladakh over several long-standing demands, including the guarantee of statehood and increased representation in parliament. While turnout remains unclear, thousands of supporters participated in previous related rallies in other cities across Ladakh. The half-day strike is likely to cause limited disruptions, though commercial disruptions, including ground shipping, are possible if the organizers prolong the action.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are almost certain along the announced march route and around the main protest site. Although violence is unlikely, isolated clashes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering. Increased vehicular congestion and road closures may affect the vicinity of demonstration sites, especially if street marches or road blockades occur. National Highways (NH) 1 and 301, connecting the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir with Ladakh, will likely be affected. Officials may impose traffic restrictions, including security cordons, diversions, and road closures along the rally route through the evening of March 20. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also probable as a large number of attendees will reach and leave the venues.
