India: Unionized Punjab roadway workers strike and protest, March 12 and 13

Unionized roadway workers to continue strike and related march across Punjab, India, through March 13. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized Punjab roadway workers, including from the Punbus/PRTC Contract Workers Union, will maintain their transport strike across Punjab through March 13. They will also march from Mohali to the Punjab Assembly from 10:00 March 13. The action is over a pay dispute. Union leaders claim 3,000 buses will remain off the roads during the strike.

Workers may stage protests in the coming days until officials agree to their demands. Associated demonstrations are possible at or near public squares, government buildings like town halls, transport hubs, and vehicle operator offices. Strike supporters may block roads with vehicles or march on the streets. Any gatherings that materialize may attract security deployment and exacerbate localized traffic disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible until the labor action concludes. While the events are likely to pass peacefully, minor skirmishes may occur if police attempt to disperse unruly crowds forcibly.

Confirm transport schedules and deliveries in advance. If necessary, seek alternative means of shipping and transport. Exercise caution around protests and allow for additional travel time. Monitor trusted local media for updates on strike and protest details, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
