Italy: Postal workers to strike nationwide, protest in Milan and Rome March 21

Unionized Poste Italiane workers to strike across Italy March 21; central protests planned for Milan and Rome.

Warning

Unionized workers employed by Poste Italiane, Italy's postal service provider, plan to conduct a nationwide strike on March 21. The purpose of the strike is to denounce the planned privatization of 29 percent of Poste Italiane. Participants will also gather for the following demonstrations:

  • Milan:

    • Protest at Piazza Cordusio from 09:30.

    • Sit-in protest at the Prefecture of Milan (Prefettura di Milano) building on Corso Monforte from 15:00.

  • Rome: Protest at the Pantheon from 10:00.

It is unclear how many participants the protests will draw.

Postal service disruptions are likely nationwide. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near protest sites. Unannounced picket protests are possible near postal facilities nationwide. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out at any protest.

Consider alternatives to postal delivery services for critical shipments and correspondence until the strike ends. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
