Nigeria: Ongoing education unions strike through March 24 /update 1

Education unions currently holding a strike across Nigeria through March 24. Reported protests, localized violence reported.

Informational

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) are currently holding a seven-day strike from March 18-24 over salary demands. Separately, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) also began striking from March 20-22. Associated protests have occurred and have concentrated near universities, with some protesters preventing access to the institutions; at least one student has reportedly died in a related incident.

Further protests are possible in the vicinity of government buildings and education facilities, particularly universities. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all protests. Clashes with security forces are possible. Should the union’s demands remain unanswered, strike and protest calls are likely beyond March 24.

Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Avoid all protests to mitigate associated disruptions. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
