Peru: Environmental groups to protest in multiple cities March 6

Environmental activists to protest in across Peru March 6. Increased security, localized transport disruptions possible.

Warning

Environmental activists plan to protest in several cities across Peru March 6. The purpose of the action is to demand the repeal of a recent forestry reform law; critics argue that the new law makes it easier to conduct timbering operations in the Amazon.

The main protest will take place outside the National Congress in Lima starting at 16:00. Demonstrations are also scheduled in several other locations, including:

  • Arequipa: March from Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA) to Plaza de Armas, 16:00

  • Cusco: Rally at Plaza de Armas, 16:00

  • Huancayo: Rally in Plaza Constitucion, 16:00

  • Puno: March from Arco Deustua to Plaza de Armas, 17:00

  • Trujillo: Rally at Plazuela El Recreo, 16:00

It remains unclear how many participants each of the events will draw. However, heightened security and ground transport disruptions are likely near the impacted areas.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for delays and consider alternative travel routes if operating in affected cities March 6.
