Romania: Taxi drivers and law enforcement officers to demonstrate in Bucharest on March 13 /update 1

Taxi drivers and police to protest in central Bucharest, Romania, on March 13. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized taxi drivers and law enforcement officers plan to conduct two protests in Bucharest on March 13. Taxi drivers will gather at Constitution Square (Piata Constitutiei) from 09:00-18:00. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand the implementation of tolling devices and taxes on rideshare services. Organizers expect up to 1,500 taxis to gather at the protest site.

Unionized local law enforcement officers will protest at the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration on Strada Apolodor from 14:00 to demand increased payment for work on weekly rest days and public holidays. It is unclear how many people will participate; however, approximately 300 participants attended a related protest on March 12.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration sites. Though unlikely, confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers tasked with monitoring the proceedings cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Constitution Square area. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
