Romania: Unionized law enforcement personnel cancel planned March 13 protest in Bucharest; taxi drivers to move forward with March 13 protest plans. /update 2

Unionized police cancel their planned March 13 protest in Bucharest; unionized taxi drivers to continue with protest at Constitution Square.

Warning

Unionized police officers canceled their planned March 13 protest in Bucharest. Organizers announced the cancellation following negotiations with authorities. Participants had planned to gather at the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration on Strada Apolodor from 14:00 to demand increased payment for work on weekly rest days and public holidays.

However, unionized taxi drivers will move forward with plans to protest at Constitution Square (Piata Constitutiei) from 09:00-18:00. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand the implementation of tolling devices and taxes on rideshare services. Organizers expect up to 1,500 taxis to gather at the protest site.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration site. Though unlikely, confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers tasked with monitoring the proceedings cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Constitution Square area. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
