South Korea: Unionized bus drivers plan to strike in Seoul from 04:00 March 28

Bus drivers to strike in Seoul, South Korea, from 04:00 March 28. Transport disruptions likely; protests, business disruptions possible.

Warning

Unionized bus drivers from the Korea Automobile and Transport Workers’ Federation plan to strike indefinitely in Seoul from 04:00 March 28. Over 16,000 workers will participate in the action to demand increased hourly wages and equal compensation for contract workers, among others. The action may be called off at short notice if negotiations progress.

Increased demand for alternative transport services is probable for the duration of the labor action. Given the work stoppage will significantly reduce bus availability, authorities have planned to increase the frequency and operating hours of subway train timings and provide free shuttle bus services from major train stations during the strike. Officials have also requested public offices, private companies, and educational institutions to stagger start times by an hour to alleviate peak-hour congestion.

Striking workers could stage demonstrations near bus terminals, public squares like Gwanghamun Square, and government buildings. Hundreds to a few thousand people may participate in related events. Police will likely monitor any demonstrations and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Localized traffic disruptions and skirmishes are possible during large gatherings, especially if activists march on or block major thoroughfares like Sejong and Uisadang roads.

Confirm transport reservations for the duration of the work stoppage. Exercise caution near protests as a precaution; monitor trusted local media for demonstration plans as organizers may not announce them in advance. Plan for travel delays and potential business disruptions until the strike ends. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
