South Korea: Unionized freight workers plan to strike in Ulsan from 14:00 March 21

Unionized freight workers to strike in Ulsan, South Korea, from 14:00 March 21. Shipping delays likely, protests possible.

Warning

Unionized freight workers from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), Public Service and Transport Workers' Union (KPTU), and Freight Solidarity Headquarters plan to strike in Ulsan from 14:00 March 21. Around 2,500 workers will participate in the action to demand return-to-work rights and guaranteed employment for all drivers at Korea Alcohol Industries. Organizers did not specify a duration for the work stoppage. The action could extend beyond March 21 or recur in the coming weeks if officials fail to meet protest demands.

Striking workers could stage demonstrations near entrances of ports, factories, or Inland Container Depots (ICDs). Gatherings are also possible at public squares and government buildings. Hundreds to thousands of people may participate in related events.

Police will likely monitor any demonstrations and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Shipping and delivery delays at ports in Ulsan are probable for the duration of the labor action. Lingering disruptions may continue beyond the end of the strike as service providers work to resolve backlogs.

Confirm shipping schedules for the duration of the work stoppage. Consider using alternative routes for time-sensitive deliveries. Avoid all protests as a precaution. Confirm transport reservations, business appointments, and road status if operating near ports. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
