Taiwan: Rally ongoing from Liberty Square Arch to the Presidential Office Building in Taipei until at least 12:00 March 22
Demonstration underway from Liberty Square Arch to Presidential Office Building in Taipei, Taiwan, until 12:00 March 22. Disruptions likely.
Activists from several organizations, including The Clean Air Alliance, are holding a rally from Liberty Square Arch in front of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, towards the Presidential Office Building March 22. The protest will go on until at least 12:00. The action is to denounce existing tobacco regulations that are perceived to benefit cigarette manufacturers. Organizers claim that at least a thousand participants will join the event, which is likely to pass peacefully.
A heightened security presence is likely along the rally route and around the protest sites. Authorities announced several traffic restrictions, including road closures for the three westbound lanes along Gongyuan Road, Ketagalan Boulevard, and Zhongshan South Road. Localized transport disruptions are probable. Isolated clashes are possible if police attempt to disperse the gathering forcibly.
Exercise caution around the protest site. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations, use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
