Brazil: Water disruptions affecting parts of Rio de Janeiro's Metropolitan Area as of April 5

Water disruptions affect multiple areas in Rio de Janeiro's Metropolitan Area, Brazil, as of April 5.

Informational

As of April 5, disruptions to water distribution are being reported across several areas of Rio de Janeiro's Metropolitan Area after toluene, a harmful chemical, was reportedly detected in the Imunana-Laranjal water system. Water shortages are being reported in parts of Niteroi, Sao Goncalo, Itaborai, Marica, and the island of Paqueta. Rio de Janeiro's State Water and Sanitation Company (Companhia Estadual de Aguas e Esgotos, CEDAE) and officials are carrying out tests and suspended water distribution from the Imunana-Laranjal facility. CEDAE is trying to mitigate the water shortage by delivering water to key areas, including hospitals and schools.

Business disruptions are likely, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of water. Prolonged works may delay the restoration of water supplies and cause lingering disruptions.

Minimize nonessential water use until supplies normalize. Follow official advice in impacted areas. Monitor local news sources for further developments. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
