Authorities are responding to the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge that connected Estreito, Maranhao State, and Aguiarnopolis, Tocantins State, on Dec. 22. The bridge collapse reportedly caused several vehicles to plunge into the Tocantins River. Officials have confirmed that the bridge collapse left at least one person dead and another injured; at least two others were missing following the incident. The BR-226 highway, of which the collapsed bridge was a part, is closed in the area.
Officials will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the area for the duration of the emergency response. Transport disruptions will likely affect the BR-226 highway and other routes in the area until further notice. The bridge collapse may lead to supply chain disruptions in some locations.
