Brazil: Police operation ongoing in Rio de Janeiro's Rocinha area on Dec. 17 /update 1

Authorities are conducting a security operation in the Rocinha area in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro on Dec. 17. Reports suggest that at least one suspect has been killed, and two others have been injured in armed clashes with security forces. One individual has also been arrested. No reports suggest that violence has affected other areas surrounding Rocinha.

Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected area through at least late Dec. 17. Transport disruptions, including along Estrada da Gavea, are likely. Further armed clashes in Rocinha are likely during the police operation. Suspects may also erect multiple barricades in the affected areas.
