Brazil: Heightened security likely in Morro dos Prazeres favela of Rio de Janeiro after Argentine tourist shot in area Dec. 12

Argentine tourist shot in Morro dos Prazeres favela of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dec. 12; lingering increased security presence likely.

Informational

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence in the Morro dos Prazeres favela (shantytown) of Rio de Janeiro over the coming days after an Argentine tourist was shot and seriously injured in the area on Dec. 12. The tourist reportedly entered the community, a stronghold of the Red Command (Comando Vermelho) criminal organization, while using a GPS device to travel to the Christ the Redeemer statue. Security forces personnel deployed to the scene following the shooting to transport the injured tourist to the hospital.

Security forces may establish checkpoints and conduct more frequent patrols in the Morro dos Prazeres neighborhood over the short term. Armed clashes between security forces and members of criminal organizations, including the Red Command, cannot be ruled out in the area.

Avoid the vicinity of the shooting site as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the Morro dos Prazeres area. If operating in the area and violence breaks out, immediately seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
