On late April 27, authorities imposed a 00:01-07:00 curfew in Canete, Contulmo, and Tirua communes in Arauco Province, Bio-Bio Region, following a fatal attack earlier April 27. Unknown assailants opened fire on a police vehicle on Route P72S in the Antiquina area, killing three officers. The duration of the curfew is unclear.
A heightened police and military presence will likely remain in place throughout the affected communes in Arauco Province over the coming days.
Exercise caution if operating in affected areas of Arauco Province. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building.
Although there have been no claims of responsibility for the attack, it's possible it was carried out by members of armed groups that claim to fight for a Mapuche indigenous homeland.
