Germany: Environment activists plan to stage protests nationwide April 12 and 13 /update 1
Environment activists plan to protest in urban centers across Germany on April 12, 13. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
The environmental protest group Last Generation will lead protests dubbed "disobedient gatherings" in several cities from April 12 and 13 to call attention to record temperature rises and demand increased government action on climate change. Attendance may reach thousands of participants at each location. Last Generation activists will gather at the following locations:
Berlin: Frankfurter Allee, from 12:00 April 13.
Dusseldorf: Konigsallee, Steinstrasse , from 12:00 April 13.
Hamburg: Altona S-bahn station., from 12:00 April 13.
Konstanz: Karl-Steuer Brunnen, Zollernstrasse, from 13:15 April 12.
Events are also planned in Aschaffenburg and other smaller towns. Organizers have planned further protests in the coming weeks.
Local authorities will likely deploy additional security to protest sites. Protesters are likely to block roads and disrupt traffic near protest locations. Last Generation renounced the use of glue to stick participants to roads as of January but will continue to use peaceful means to obstruct traffic. Scuffles are possible between frustrated motorists and activists.
Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. Allow extra time if traveling in the vicinity of protest locations on April 12 and 13. Heed instructions from authorities.
