Guadeloupe: Protesters cause traffic disruptions in several areas April 17; further demonstrations likely
Protesters block roads, including RN-2 and RN-5 highways, in Guadeloupe on April 17. Further protests likely in the coming days.
Protesting sugar cane farmers are causing traffic disruptions across several areas of Guadeloupe on April 17. Demonstrators have blocked parts of Route Nationale 2 (RN-2) in Sainte-Rose and parts of Route Nationale 5 (RN-5) near Morne-a-L'Eau and Moule. Disruptions have also been reported in Les Abymes. In recent days, protesters have been carrying out slow-drive protests and, at times, burning debris to block main thoroughfares to demand negotiations on sugar cane prices.
Protesters are likely to continue blocking more routes across Guadeloupe in the coming days. Disruptions to traffic and business operations are likely during protests. Clashes are possible if security forces try to disperse protesters.
Avoid protests as a precaution. Plan on transit disruptions and seek alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Do not attempt to pass through protestor-erected roadblocks. Wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Comply with directives given by authorities.
