Increased security and mass public gatherings likely in India April 23 for Hanuman Jayanti Hindu festival. Communal clashes possible.

Warning

Increased security and mass public gatherings are likely across India April 23 as the nation observes the annual Hanuman Jayanti Hindu festival. While celebrations will take place throughout the country, the largest gatherings will likely occur in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal states. Holiday events are most likely near Hindu temples, with processions taking along major thoroughfares. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during the holiday period.

Religious and civil society groups will certainly hold processions and rallies at various locations nationwide. Typical gathering venues include Hindu temples (mandir), as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Local authorities have issued traffic advisories for several processions, including the one at Shri Gali Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Bengaluru. Participation will vary by locale, though the highest turnout will likely occur near sites hosting larger official religious events. Clashes between different religious groups or between individuals and police are possible.

Authorities have already increased security in Balasore District in Odisha and Murshidabad District in West Bengal following communal clashes during recent Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti festival processions. Enhanced security restrictions are possible in other states and may include checkpoints, road closures, and temporary restrictions on public gatherings and/or telecommunications. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Exercise caution near festival venues, places of worship, and other crowded event sites. If violence breaks out, depart immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Be on alert for the heightened risk of petty theft and watch personal possessions closely. Plan accordingly for potential localized business and transport disruptions. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
