Militia in Zummar, Nineveh Governorate, Iraq, fire at least five rockets towards Kharab al-Jir base in Al Hasakah Governorate, Syria.

Warning

Iraqi Shi'a militia in Zummar, Nineveh Governorate, have fired at least five rockets towards the Kharab al-Jir US military base in Syria's Al Hasakah Governorate late April 21. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that US ground defenses managed to intercept the rockets. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The last such attack by Shi'a militia against US and coalition military partners occurred Feb. 4.

Heightened security, as well as transport and business disruptions, are likely in the affected area. Further attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Heed the instructions of local security forces. If an attack alert is issued in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.

Shi'a militias in Iraq and Syria are likely targeting the US and its allies' bases because of their support for Israel in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. US defense officials have reported more than 160 drone, missile, and rocket attacks between mid-October 2023 and early February 2024. Further attacks are likely as long as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues. Attacks could take various forms, including weaponized drones, missiles, mortars, or rockets. Targets include US military, government, or civilian interests.
