Israel: Ultra-Orthodox protests denouncing military conscription possible across country through at least April 15

Ultra-Orthodox protests denouncing military draft possible across Israel through at least April 15; heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community could stage additional demonstrations across Israel through at least April 15 to denounce calls to end their exemption from military conscription while engaged full-time in religious study. Possible protest locations include, but are not limited to, Bnei Brak, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. Ultra-Orthodox individuals staged a related demonstration outside an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) enlistment office in Jerusalem on the evening of April 11, and some protesters reportedly clashed with police. Additionally, ultra-Orthodox demonstrators blocked a section of Highway 4 in a related protest near Bnei Brak on March 3.

Any further protests that materialize over the coming days will probably be well attended. Heightened security and localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect the vicinities of any additional demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or fail to comply with police officers' instructions.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent areas affected by demonstrations and any related disruptions. If operating near a protest and violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
