New Zealand: Student environmental activists to protest in multiple cities April 5

Student environmental activists to protest in multiple cities across New Zealand April 5. Increased security likely.

Informational

Student activists under the umbrella of Schools Strike 4 Climate (SSFC) plan to protest in multiple cities across New Zealand April 5. The action is over several demands, in particular for the government to remove the Fast Track Approvals Bill and keep the ban on offshore oil and gas exploration. Organizers have called for protests in the following cities:

  • Auckland: Dove Myer Robinson Park, 15:30

  • Christchurch: Bridge of Remembrance, 13:00

  • Dunedin: Museum Reserve, 15:30

  • Hastings: Clock Tower, 12:00

  • Invercargill: Queens Park, 12:30

  • Nelson: Trafalgar Centre Carpark, 14:00

  • New Plymouth: Puke Ariki Landing, 12:30

  • Palmerston North: The Square, 12:00

  • Wellington: Civic Square, 12:00

Related actions will also take place in other towns. The highest attendance is likely in Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington, where hundreds of participants could join the rallies. Dozens of protesters will likely join the demonstrations in smaller cities.

Authorities will likely monitor the events and may attempt to disperse the gatherings if they are especially disruptive. While the gatherings will probably remain peaceful, minor isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Activists may march along and block roadways, prompting localized transport and business disruptions.

Exercise caution near protest sites. Depart the area at the first sign of security disturbance. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. Do not attempt to navigate around protester-erected roadblocks; allow police to dismantle them before proceeding. Plan accordingly for localized business disruptions. Heed instructions from authorities.
