Nigeria: Further electrical disruptions possible nationwide over coming weeks following recent partial grid collapse April 15 /update 1
Further power outages possible across Nigeria in the coming weeks following the April 15 partial grid collapse.
Further disruptions to the supply of electricity remain possible in the coming weeks following the country's April 15 partial electrical grid collapse. The blackout was the sixth such failure to impact the nation since the start of 2024 and occurred around 02:40 following a fire at the Afam Power Generating Station. Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) succeeding in restoring power later in the day, future major outages could occur with little to no warning.
Disruptions to business and communications are likely during blackout periods. Malfunctioning traffic signals may result in transport disruptions and longer driving times. Electrical grid collapses may further cause service disruptions at some essential facilities, such as ATMs and filling stations, to be temporarily unavailable.
Plan accordingly for power supply disruptions. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies during prolonged outages. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets in areas where traffic signals are malfunctioning.
