Uruguay: Public workers' unions to stage nationwide strike and demonstrate in Montevideo on April 18 to oppose a recent labor reform

Unionized public workers, including members of the Confederation of Government Workers' Organizations (Confederacion de Organizaciones de Funcionarios del Estado, COFE), plan to hold a 24-hour nationwide strike in Uruguay, with a rally in Montevideo April 18. Demonstrators intend to gather near the country's Economy and Finance Ministry, located near the intersection of Colonia and Paraguay, starting at 10:00. Activists have said the strike will significantly impact government offices, as well as medical services, which will only receive emergencies. Some schools and universities may also be impacted.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Business disruptions due to the strike are likely nationwide.
