Colombia: Anti-abortion activists to stage protests nationwide May 4
Anti-abortion activists to protest nationwide in Colombia May 4. Increased security, localized transport and business disruptions likely.
Anti-abortion activists affiliated with the umbrella organization United for Life (Unidos por la Vida) plan to hold protests in cities across Colombia on May 4. The purpose of the action is to condemn a 2022 ruling by the Constitutional Court that legalized abortion in the country until the 24th week of a pregnancy.
The following demonstrations will likely be among the larger of the planned events:
Bogota: March from Parque Nacional to Plaza de Bolivar, 10:00
Barranquilla: March from Nuestra Senora del Perpetuo Socorro Church to Plaza de la Paz, 16:00
Bucaramanga: Rally at Parque San Pio, 14:30
Cali: Rally at Parque de las Banderas, 10:00
Cartagena: Rally at Avenida Santander, 15:00
Manizales: Rally at Torre del Cable, 10:00
Medellin: March from Estadio subway station to Parque de las Luces, 14:30
Pereira: Rally at Plaza Bolivar, 10:00
Santa Marta: Rally at Pibe Valderrama Statue, 15:00
Thousands of people will probably participate in gatherings scheduled in major cities such as Bogota, Cali, or Medellin. Heightened security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the marches and rallies. Counter-protests cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Consider alternative driving routes to avoid protest sites; allow extra time to reach nearby destinations. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
