Armed clashes are ongoing in the Cauca Department in Morales, early May 20. Armed individuals have attacked a police station. Several explosions have also been reported by residents throughout the municipality. Armed individuals reportedly breached the premises of Banco Agrario. A helicopter heading to support security forces in the area was reportedly hit by armed individuals; additional troops are being deployed to the municipality. A military base in the town of Suarez, Cauca Department, was also under attack on May 20; information regarding this incident remains limited. Officials have not yet provided information regarding casualties.
Violence is likely to continue in the coming hours, and additional attacks on Colombian security forces are possible throughout the Cauca Department. Officials will likely maintain tight security in the area in the coming days. Many businesses in the area are likely to close May 20.
Morales is located 56 km (35 miles) north of Popayan.
