Colombia: Taxi drivers plan to strike and protest in several parts of the country, including Bogota, on May 29

Taxi drivers plan to strike and protest in several parts of Colombia, including Bogota, May 29. Transport disruptions are likely.

Warning

Taxi drivers affiliated with several organizations, including the Confederation of Taxis (Confederacion de Taxis, CONFEDETAX), plan to strike and protest across several urban centers, including Bogota, from 07:30 May 29. Protesters will likely block some main roads in the capital, Medellin, Tunja, and Itagui, among others. Participants may also stage "go-slow" protests by deliberately driving at very low speeds or parking vehicles on busy streets, causing traffic congestion. Taxi drivers will be demanding that local authorities regulate private transport services.

Increased demand for alternative transport is likely in the affected areas. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor related protest activities. Clashes have occurred previously between police and protesting taxi drivers in Colombia; similar confrontations are possible, especially if police attempt to clear any road blockades.

Plan accordingly for transport disruptions and allow additional travel time. Consider arranging alternative means of transport in advance of the strike. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks.
