Germany: Climate activists to demonstrate in cities nationwide May 31

Environmental activists to protest in urban centers across Germany May 31. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Fridays for Future movement plan to demonstrate in cities across Germany on May 31. The purpose of the gatherings is to raise awareness for environmental causes and the upcoming EU Parliament elections. It is unclear how many participants will attend; however, previous related demonstrations have drawn large crowds. The following will probably be among the larger gatherings:

  • Berlin: Rally at Brandenburg Gate from 12:00

  • Cologne: Rally at Deutz Train Station (Bahnhof Deutz) on Opladener Strasse from 16:00.

  • Frankfurt: Rally at the Old Opera House (Alte Oper) from 16:00

  • Hamburg: March around the city center starting and ending at the intersection of Glacischaussee and Feldstrasse 14:00-18:15.

  • Munich: Rally at Koenigsplatz from 14:00.

Related events of varying sizes will also take place in other locations across the country. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstration sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstration sites as a standard precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near rally locations. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
