Ghana: Fuel drivers striking indefinitely as of May 21

Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union declares indefinite strike across Ghana as of May 21. Protests and fuel shortages possible.

Warning

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has declared an indefinite strike starting May 21. The union is demanding improved working conditions, which the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) reportedly refused to implement. Union leaders have warned of likely shortages at fuel stations across the country in the coming days.

While it is unclear whether a majority of union members are adhering to the strike call, the strike may cause fuel shortages nationwide, particularly if authorities do not address the union’s demands. Striking drivers could demonstrate, mainly outside fuel depots, related companies, and government offices such as the NPA in Accra. Striking drivers could also block major road routes. Security forces may deploy to monitor large gatherings; violence cannot be ruled out if police forcibly disperse crowds.

Plan for fuel shortages and long queues at gas stations as long as the strike continues. Confirm all ground transport services before travel. Do not buy fuel on the black market. Refuel vehicles when supply is available. Avoid all demonstrations and do not attempt to force a roadblock.
