Iceland: Unionized ground staff plan strike action at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) May 9-20

Unionized security staff plan series of strikes at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), Iceland, May 9-20. Flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized ground staff plan a series of strikes at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) May 9-20. Members of the Federation of State Civil Aviation Employees and Sameyki labor unions voted for the industrial action on May 2, to demand improved salaries from the airport operator ISAVIA. From May 9, airport employees will implement bans on training and overtime. Security staff will stop work from 04:00-08:00 on May 10, 16, 17, and 20. Authorities warn that the action will impact flight operations. Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is Iceland's principal airport and handles nearly all international flights to and from the island.

The strikes will likely cause flight disruptions including delays and possible cancellations. The security officers' strike will likely cause passenger processing and airport transit delays. The cumulative effect of the strikes May 9-20 will likely cause increasing disruptions over the period, as authorities struggle to recover from each event.

Confirm flight status and reservations at KEF. Do not check out of accommodation until onward transit is confirmed. Allow increased time for airport arrival and passenger processing. Follow local travel advice.
