Iranian authorities will hold a state funeral for President Ebrahim Raisi in several cities May 21-23. Raisi, along with eight other passengers, died in a helicopter crash near Khunirud in East Azerbaijan Province May 19. The procession will occur in the following cities:

  • Tabriz: From Shohada Square to Imam Khomeini Mosalla from 09:30 May 21.

  • Qom: From the shrine of Hazrat Masoumeh to Jamkaran Mosque from 16:00 May 21.

  • Tehran: At the Imam Khomeini Mosalla from 21:00 on May 21, followed by a march from the University of Tehran to Azadi Square from 07:30 May 22, and a ceremony for high-ranking foreign dignitaries from 16:00 May 22.

  • Birjand: From 08:00 May 23.

  • Mashhad: At the shrine of Imam Reza, where Raisi will be buried, from 12:00 May 23.

Security personnel will likely place roadblocks and perform identity checks near the events. Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas where heightened security measures are enforced. Security personnel may temporarily close roads to prioritize official motorcade movements.
