Lebanon: Israeli airstrikes target multiple areas near Baalbak May 15
Israel launches airstrikes against multiple locations near Baalbek, Lebanon, May 15. Further cross-border violence likely.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly conducted airstrikes on multiple locations outside of Baalbek, Lebanon, late on May 15. At least ten strikes were reported across the region, including near Nabi Chit, Taybeh, Khraibeh, and Brital. It was not immediately clear whether the strikes resulted in any injuries. The latest strikes come after the IDF reportedly killed Hussein Makki, who served as a senior field commander within the Hizballah militant group in Tyre, on May 14; Hizballah announced that it attempted several strikes on IDF positions in response; however, there is no confirmation whether these caused any damage.
Heightened security and transport and business disruptions are likely in the affected area over the coming hours. Further cross-border violence is likely over the short term.
Avoid the impacted location until authorities give the all-clear. Plan for localized disruptions. Allow additional time for travel and seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected area. Heed all official directives.
The IDF has regularly retaliated against projectile attacks by Hisballah; however, it has increasingly begun targeting the organization's military infrastructure deeper inside Lebanon in an effort to deter further attacks.
Baalbek, a Hizballah stronghold, is around 100 km (62 miles) from the Israeli border.
