Libya: Clashes in Gharyan May 7

Armed groups clashed with security forces in Gharyan, Libya, May 7. Increased security, additional clashes likely.

Warning

Armed clashes occurred between militias affiliated with the Stabilization and Support Authority (SSA) and members of the Special Deterrence Forces (SDF) judicial police in Gharyan on May 7. The fighting reportedly occurred near the Gharyan city courthouse on Al-Hurriya Street as the SSA-affiliated armed groups attempted to extract prisoners forcibly. Reports of casualties have yet to emerge.

Further clashes are possible in the coming hours and days. Officials will likely heighten security in the city and surrounding areas. Additional patrols and checkpoints are possible. Officials could also implement movement restrictive measures, such as curfews, in response to further violence. This incident could also increase tensions between rival armed groups throughout the Tripolitania region.

Avoid areas affected by armed clashes and consider deferring nonessential travel to Gharyan until the situation stabilizes. Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in the city. If violence breaks out in your area, seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
