New Zealand: Junior doctors at public hospital to stage protests in multiple cities May 7, strike nationwide 07:00 May 7-08:00 May 8

Around 2500 unionized junior doctors employed by New Zealand's public healthcare system, Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand), plan to stage picket protests outside hospitals on May 7. The purpose of the action is to reject Te Whatu Ora's proposed pay offer. The following actions are confirmed:

• Christchurch Hospital: 10:00-11:30

• Dunedin Hospital: 07:00-09:00

• Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings: 08:00

• Palmerston North Hospital: 08:00

• Rotorua Hospital: 08:00-09:00

• Waikato Hospital in Hamilton: 08:00-10:00

• Wellington Regional Hospital: 08:00

• Whangarei Hospital: 08:00

Union members also plan to stage a walkout 07:00 May 7-08:00 May 8.

Dozens of protesters will likely join each demonstration. Authorities will likely monitor the events and may attempt to disperse the gatherings if they are especially disruptive. While the gatherings will probably remain peaceful, minor isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible.

Te Whatu Ora has indicated that contingency plans are in place to minimize disruptions to health services and all emergency departments will remain open. Public hospitals may postpone or cancel scheduled appointments and planned surgeries. Longer-than-normal waiting times are possible in all medical facilities, while non-emergency cases may be turned away.
