Nigeria: Further protests likely in Kano State through May after controversial state decision
Further protests and heightened security likely in Kano State, Nigeria, through May after legal decision. Unrest in Gaya May 26.
Further protests and heightened security are likely in Kano State through May after the state government repealed the Kano Emirates Council Law on May 23. The law, enacted in 2019, established five emirates in Kano. The repeal dissolves these emirates, including Bichi, Karaye, Gaya, Kano, and Rano. On May 26, residents of Gaya led an anti-government protest in the town in opposition to the state government's decision. There have been no reports of violence.
Further protests are possible in major towns and cities in Kano over the near term. Officials could deploy additional security forces to monitor gatherings and as a general precaution. Gathering sites include town or city centers, government institutions, residences of traditional leaders or the Kano State House of Assembly in Kano city. Confrontations between protesters and the security forces are possible. Should unrest occur, officials could close roads, enforce curfews, or limit telecommunications.
Avoid all protests. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Exercise caution near possible protest areas. Heed the instructions of security forces.
