Peru: Health workers begin indefinite nationwide strike May 21
Health workers begin indefinite strike in Peru May 21. Protests planned from 08:00 in central Lima and outside hospitals nationwide.
Unionized health workers affiliated with multiple unions, including the National Union of Social Health Security Nurses (Sindicato Nacional de Enfermeros del Seguro Social de Salud, SINESS), began an indefinite nationwide strike in Peru on May 21. The strike will likely affect non-emergency Social Health Security (Seguro Social de Salud, EsSalud) services. The workers also plan to demonstrate at Lima's Campo de Marte from 08:00 May 21 and outside hospitals nationwide. The action is to demand an increase in salaries and improved working conditions.
The strike will likely significantly limit EsSalud medical services nationwide. However, emergency services will be guaranteed. Further protests near health centers, especially in Lima and other major cities, are also possible in the coming days. Localized disruptions are likely near protests.
Confirm medical appointments in advance. Avoid any protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building.
