Civil society groups and environmental activists plan a protest march in Iasi, June 1. Attendees will gather from 17:00 at the Palace of Culture, and then march following Stephan cel Mare, Union Square, Lapusneanu, Indepedetei, Targu Cucu, Hotel Europa, Anastasie Panu, before returning to the Palace of Culture.Organizers will denounce deforestation in the region, and demand increased support for local forests. Protest leaders predict that several hundred will take part in the event.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely throughout central Iasi. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the demonstration as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in Iasi. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
