South Korea: Activists holding protest marches in downtown Seoul from 15:00 May 25
Protest marches in downtown Seoul, South Korea, from 15:00 May 25. Tight security, localized disruptions likely; scuffles possible.
Activists affiliated with the Candlelight movement will demonstrate at Seoul Station from 15:00 May 25, before marching along Saejong-daero at 16:30 and gathering at Exit 7 of City Hall Station from 17:00. Participants will then hold a march at 18:15 from The Plaza Hotel, passing through Euljiro and Jonggak stations, before gathering at Seoul Finance Center. The action is to demand several political concessions, including the impeachment of incumbent President Yoon Suk-yeol. While turnout remains unclear, a few thousand people could attend the gathering.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the announced march routes and around the main protest sites. Although violence is unlikely, isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering. Further traffic disruptions are possible through the evening of May 25, especially if activists hold road blockades. Increased congestion and demand for public transport are also probable as a large number of attendees will reach and leave the venues.
Exercise caution around the protest sites and rally routes. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
