Russian attack on hardware supermarket in Kharkiv, Ukraine, kills at least four, wounds more than 35 others May 25; casualty count may rise.

Warning

Officials have reported that a Russian guided bomb attack on the Epicentr K hardware supermarket in Kharkiv killed at least four people and wounded more than 35 others May 25. The assault reportedly caused a large fire to ignite at the site that emitted thick, black smoke. Emergency crews have since contained the blaze. Authorities have variously asserted that about 120 to more than 200 people were inside the store at the time of the attack; the casualty count may accordingly rise over the coming hours.

The smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in the surrounding area. Authorities will likely maintain heightened security measures in the vicinity of the attack over the coming hours. Localized ground transport and business disruptions are probable. Utility outages are also likely in the aftermath of the assault. Further explosions may occur across the city over the short term.

Avoid areas affected by Russian strikes until authorities give the all-clear. Shelter in place if there are strikes in your area. Stay away from windows and exterior walls if officials report incoming projectile fire. Follow the instructions of local security personnel, especially when instructed to seek refuge in air-raid shelters. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Do not approach suspected unexploded ordnance. Consider remaining indoors if smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
