Uruguay: Activists to stage demonstration in Montevideo May 20

Activists plan to hold the annual March of Silence (Marcha del Silencio) demonstration in Montevideo on May 20. The purpose of the action is to demand justice for individuals who disappeared during the country's 1973-1985 dictatorship. Participants will rally from 19:00 at the intersection of Avenida General Rivera and Juan D. Jackson before marching toward Plaza Cagancha. The number of people that may participate in the demonstration was not immediately clear.

Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence in downtown Montevideo to monitor the demonstration. Officials could close local roads on short notice to facilitate the march.
