Canada: Transit workers plan to strike in Toronto June 7
Public transit workers plan to strike in Toronto, Canada, from 00:01 June 7. The strike could suspend subway, bus, and streetcar services.
Public transit workers affiliated with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 (ATU Local 113) plan to strike in Toronto from 00:01 on June 7. The purpose of the action is to make several labor-related demands. The strike could halt the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC) subway, bus, and streetcar public transport services in the city. However, the Wheel-Trans service would continue for people with disabilities. Additionally, transit services provided by Metrolinx, the Durham Region Transit (DRT), and Mississauga's MiWay are unlikely to be affected. Almost 12,000 workers may participate in the strike. Negotiations between TTC and ATU Local 113 are still ongoing.
Unless an agreement is reached by the end of June 6, the labor action could cause major public transport disruptions across the Toronto metropolitan area. Increased traffic congestion is likely, as commuters who would normally ride public transportation resort to using their own vehicles. Associated protests are also possible.
Make alternative transportation arrangements in Toronto for the duration of the labor strike. Allow extra time to reach metropolitan area destinations. Monitor local sources for updates on the status of the work stoppage.
