Canada: Unionized border workers likely to launch strike starting at 16:00 EDT June 7

Border workers likely to launch indefinite strike across Canada starting 16:00 EDT June 7. Disruptions likely at ports of entry.

Warning

Workers of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), affiliated with the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU), plan to launch an indefinite strike at ports of entry nationwide starting at 16:00 EDT on June 7 to demand improved salaries, benefits, and job protections. CIU leaders and government representatives continue to negotiate, and the strike could be averted.

If the strike moves forward, it would involve around 9,000 workers. While most are considered "essential" by authorities and would be forced to continue working, they would likely take measures to slow processes at border entries, thus creating significant delays.

If the strike materializes, disruptions at land, air, and marine ports of entry will likely occur, disrupting business and border crossings.

Plan for delays if traveling to Canada June 7. Confirm flights in advance.
