As of early June 19, emergency services are continuing their response to a series of strong explosions that took place at a military ammunition depot in N'Djamena in the late hours of June 18. According to preliminary information, the blasts occurred after a fire broke out at the installation; authorities have not revealed the exact location of the depot in question, other than to state that it is situated in the city's Goudji area. Goudji is located within 3 km (2 miles) north of N'Djamena International Airport (NDJ), with local sources reporting that flames from the explosion could be seen from the airport. Officials have as yet released no information concerning any casualties; the cause of the initial fire is under investigation.
Authorities could suspend or otherwise restrict flights at NDJ into at least the mid-morning of June 19 out of an abundance of caution, depending on the progress of the emergency response and the results of the investigative work.
