China: Japanese Embassy in China issues security advisory June 25 following recent stabbing incidents

Japanese Embassy in China issues security advisory for Japanese nationals June 25 following recent stabbing incidents.

Informational

The Japanese Embassy in China issued a security advisory June 25 following an increase in stabbing incidents in recent weeks. On June 24, a Japanese woman and her child were injured in a knife attack while waiting for a bus near a Japanese School along Huaihai Street in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The motive of the attack remains unclear. The alert advises Japanese nationals to exercise caution in public areas, avoid drawing attention by speaking Japanese loudly, and remain vigilant near the Japanese Embassy or Japanese schools.

Although officials have not confirmed that the suspect intentionally targeted Japanese nationals, Japanese schools across China and the Japanese Embassy in Beijing have boosted security measures as a precaution. In recent days, vandals have targeted Japanese schools in Qingdao and Suzhou, throwing stones and eggs at the facilities. The Japanese Embassy has also reported an uptick in harassing calls criticizing the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. The June 24 incident follows another recent knife attack involving four American teachers at a public park in Jilin City June 10.
