Colombia: Authorities likely to maintain heightened security in Jamundi, Valle del Cauca Department, through mid-June following bomb attack June 12 /update 1
Motorcycle bomb attack kills one person in Jamundi, Valle del Cauca Department, Colombia, June 12; lingering heightened security likely.
Authorities will likely maintain heightened security measures in parts of the Jamundi area in Valle del Cauca Department through at least mid-June after a motorcycle bomb attack killed one person and wounded at least five others, including two police officers, in the town June 12. The explosive device reportedly detonated near the intersection of Carrera 10 and Calle 12 as a police patrol passed by the scene. Shortly before the blast occurred in central Jamundi, suspected members of the Jaime Martinez Front, a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC), attacked a police station in the rural Potrerito area of the town with gunfire and explosives; no casualties were reported in connection with the assault. Both incidents are likely part of a larger offensive by ex-FARC militants against police personnel and facilities in the area.
Police and military personnel will likely deploy throughout the Jamundi area and conduct inspections of people and property over the short term. Road closures are possible, especially if security forces suspect additional explosive devices may have been planted. Transport and business disruptions may occur throughout Jamundi and are especially likely in the vicinity of the abovementioned explosion.
Avoid the site of the explosion in Jamundi until authorities give the all-clear and vacate the scene. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area, and allow additional time to travel if operating in Jamundi. Strictly heed all instructions issued by local officials.
